We (almost) all love Greek feta, but there’s always been a debate around its real id and its overall value in terms of nutrition plans and diets.
Trying to decode the DNA of the popular cheese, two Greek scientists (AK. Anagnostopoulos and GT. Tsangaris) have recently published a thorough study (Feta cheese proteins: Manifesting the identity of Greece׳s National Treasure.), according to which the Greek feta cheese consists of 489 proteins, making it one of the most protein-rich cheese varieties in the whole world!
It’s also worth mentioning that in their initial report, the scientists amassed representative feta cheese samples/types from parts of Greece entitled to produce this “protected designation of origin” (p.d.o) cheese type and analyzed in full their protein content by employing exhaustive deep-proteome analyses.
